Now 15 years old and still dominant, Google tweaks its search recipe
Sep 26, 7:55PM
46 mins ago Sep. 26, 2013 - 12:43 PM PDT
It's hard to believe that Google is already 15 years old — it has risen so quickly in importance that it's hard to believe the internet even existed at all before it. But, despite firm control of the market for searches and search advertising, the company still needs to keep improving its search experience, and introduced the new Hummingbird search algorithm at its own birthday party.
As reported by Danny Sullivan of SearchEngineLand, Hummingbird isn't an upcoming algorithm — it has actually been live for roughly a month now. But it does bring some extra features to the table that allow users to conduct more complex searches with greater ease. Replacing the previous algorithm, known as Caffeine, Hummingbird searches for keywords in queries to better understand concepts and their relationships. The new algorithm not only affects page ranking, but allows the website to know when and how to pull from the Knowledge Graph — Google's own homegrown database of facts.
Google also showed off some of the features that Hummingbird facilitates, including comparison searches and reminder notifications across both desktop and mobile platforms. The company, which went over the details in its search blog, and added that expansions will keep coming.
"We'll keep improving Google Search so it does a little bit more of the hard work for you," the blog said.

Flan (My Grandpa Jack's Recipe) - Shari Blogs...all things sweet ...
Sep 26, 7:40PM
If you like egg custard, you will really like Flan. We're continuing our Mexican theme week here on the blog. Flan is a Spanish egg custard. It has it's own special texture and flavor. This recipe came from my Grandpa Jack who is a great cook and likes to experiment with recipes.
This recipe can be served with berries, whipped cream, or extra Carmel sauce. It is very versatile.
My grandmother's family came to this country from Spain so our family meals always had a lot of different flavors.
Flan (My Grandpa Jack's Recipe)
Author: Shari Blogs – All Things Sweet & Delicious :
- 7 large eggs
- ¾ cup of sugar
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 2 cans of evaporated milk (13 or 14 oz)
- 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
- ½ cup brown sugar
- Preheat oven to 350°.
- Beat the eggs, add sugar & salt. Beat in cans of milk, and add vanilla.
- Place brown sugar in the bottom of a round pan. (The pan should be 8 or 10 inches by about 2½ to 3 inches deep so it will hold the fluid).
- Even the brown sugar so it covers the bottom of the pan.
- Pour the milk solution over a spoon onto the brown sugar. (The spoon is to prevent disturbing the brown sugar).
- Place this pan in another pan with about 1 inch of water in the bottom to prevent it from burning.
- Place in oven and bake for approx. 1 hour.
- Test with fork or knife and cook until nothing sticks to the fork/knife.
- Remove from oven, cool, cut around the edges and quickly turn over on a plate held tightly to pan.

Sliced Baked Potatoes Recipe | Money Saving Mom®
Sep 26, 7:33PM
I've been making Sliced Baked Potatoes for years. In fact, this was one of the first recipes I started making way back in my early teens!
These are versatile, hearty, and delicious. They are a fun way to dress up an ordinary potato!
Sliced Baked Potatoes
- 4 medium baking potatoes (evenly-sized)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2-3 Tablespoons melted butter
- 2-3 Tablespoons chopped fresh herbs (parsley, chives, thyme, sage, etc.) or 2-3 teaspoons dried herbs (of your choice
- 4 Tablespoons cheddar cheese, grated
- 1 1/2 Tablespoons Parmesan cheese
Preheat oven to 425°F.
Scrub and rinse potatoes. Cut into thin slices, but NOT all the way through.
Put potatoes in a baking dish and fan out the slices. Sprinkle with salt and drizzle with butter, then sprinkle with herbs.
Bake potatoes for about 50 minutes. Remove from oven and sprinkle with cheese. Then bake for another 10-15 minutes until lightly browned and potatoes are done.

Game Day Grub - Po Boy Recipe
Sep 26, 7:30PM
Our Game Day Grub-fixing Guru, John Haman, shares a Po Boy recipe, and this isn't just any Po Boy; it's his Roast-Beef-Gravy-and-French-Fry Po Boy. Get your game-day eating face on; grab some friends.
Let's party and eat, y'all!
Drown your sorrows in gravy. That's the best way to forget the Rutgers meltdown and get yourself ramped up for a respectable showing against the Aggies.
Just absolutely bury your food in gravy. But, start off that gravy with a first-class roux, enrich it with beef stock, soak some leftover roast in it, then pour that concoction over authentic po-boy bread with a thick layer of french fries under the gravy-meat. Melt some sharp cheese over the top and serve that bad boy with the gravy dripping down your arms.
This is the dawning of the roast-beef-gravy-and-french-fry po boy. If you're a big fan of Emeril you will notice his signature here. The inspiration for this sandwich was the "Poor Man's Poor Boy" he made on the air for Rachel Ray's cooking show. It's basically a French-fry po boy with beefy gravy poured over the fries and melted cheese on top.
You can do this easy or you can do it fancy; we did it somewhere in between. We had no roast just laying around, so we bought a small portion of precooked, refrigerated roast at the store. We made a roux-based gravy, and I left a bread-starter in the fridge overnight so could cook up some authentic po-boy loaves the next day. We fried our own fries from potatoes we cut. And, we bought some beautiful horseradish white cheddar cheese from Kroger to top it all off.
But you can take this more downmarket and get great results. Buy a real baguette at a great bakery, such as Boulevard in Little Rock. Bake some Ore-Ida fries real crispy. Use whatever cheese you like. Just, for the love of all that is holy, don't use canned gravy.
You must make the roux, because everything begins with that.
